Cole: Newcastle must buy in January or risk relegation

Former Newcastle United striker Andrew Cole reckons his former side will have to invest in new players in January or risk being relegated to the Championship.

Cole, who is the third highest goalscorer in Premier League history, was recently inducted into the Newcastle hall of fame after making his name with the Magpies during the early nineties.

The former England international believes Newcastle’s current struggles are down to a lack on investment during the summer transfer window and believes manager Rafa Benitez will need to be backed in January or else his old club will be drawn into a relegation battle.

“In the Premier League, you have got to invest,” said Cole at his induction ceremony.

“If you don’t invest, you are going to struggle. Whatever happens, in January they are going to have to invest.

“There are a lot of teams around Newcastle United at the moment – that could get see them get drawn into a relegation battle, and they don’t want that.”

Newcastle secured their first Premier League win of the season at the 11th attempt last weekend against Watford and currently sit in 17th place in the table after 11 games.
