With less than three days to go until the transfer deadline, Chelsea’s search for a new central defender continues.

The Blues have been disappointed in their chase for Serie A trio Kalidou Koulibaly of Napoli, Juventus defender Giorgio Chiellini and AC Milan’s Alesio Romagnoli, and have now turned their attentions to another defender in Italy.

According to reports, Chelsea will make a last gasp move for Lazio defender Stefan de Vrij. The Dutch defender moved to the Italian capital in 2014 after an impressive campaign with the Netherlands at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, and could now be the target of Chelsea boss Antonio Conte.

The Sun claims that a fee of around £21million should be enough to start negotiations, although Chelsea are unwilling to spend more than £25million to strengthen their ageing defence.
