Chelsea visit Everton on Saturday lunchtime looking to build on a 5-1 win over Bournemouth. Xabi Alonso’s side are sixth on 10 points.
That win ended a three-match winless run that included a 3-0 defeat at Brentford, and Joao Pedro and Jordan Henderson each scored twice. Chelsea have scored 15 league goals but conceded 13, and have gone 22 Premier League matches without a clean sheet. They opened the season with a 3-2 win at Fulham and a 4-3 win against Brighton & Hove Albion, and are level on points with fifth-placed Everton. They have lost six of their last nine visits to the blue half of Merseyside, including a 3-0 defeat at Hill Dickinson in March.
Chelsea team news
Reece James is out after what Chelsea called successful minor knee surgery, and is expected to be absent until after the November international break. Emmanuel Emegha is also ruled out, with Alonso saying the striker “felt a little thing” in training and will be back training next week. He has not yet played for the club since joining from Strasbourg. Jamie Gittens (ankle) remains unavailable. James’s absence leaves Josh Acheampong deputising in a back three alongside Maxence Lacroix and Levi Colwill.
Alonso may name the side that beat Bournemouth. Moises Caicedo returned from a calf injury in that game and is expected to partner Henderson in midfield. Pedro Neto and Pep Chavarria are predicted in the wing-back roles. Cole Palmer and Morgan Rogers are expected to operate behind Joao Pedro, who has five league goals and three assists, with Rogers scoring his fourth of the season against Bournemouth. Emiliano Martinez is expected in goal.
Chelsea predicted lineup
Chelsea possible starting XI: Martinez; Acheampong, Lacroix, Colwill; Neto, Caicedo, Henderson, Chavarria; Palmer, Rogers; Joao Pedro
