Chelsea still in the race to sign Romelu Lukaku

Chelsea are still in the race to sign Everton striker Romelu Lukaku despite Manchester United agreeing a fee for the Belgian.

The sensational news yesterday was of course how Manchester United agreed a £75 million fee for the Everton striker, after having been widely expected that he would move back to Stamford Bridge.

Lukaku was expected to fly back to England today for preseason training with Everton, however he has not flown home and is remaining on his holiday in Los Angeles, where he is spending time with Manchester United’s Paul Pogba at UCLA.

It is even thought that the Everton striker has even completed a medical while in the USA.

United themselves fly out to Los Angeles on Sunday where by which point they hope he will be a Manchester United player.

However, according to The Guardian newspaper, Chelsea still believe they are in pole position to sign the 24-year-old, despite United agreeing a deal.

Lukaku has been linked with a return to Chelsea for a number of months, and it was thought that the Belgian’s preference was to return to the club having left back in 2014.

Should Chelsea miss out on Lukaku, it would place further strain between the relationship of Antonio Conte and board members of the club following their inability to add his desired targets before pre-season training, which starts on Monday.

The Blues have been linked with a variety of players including Tiemoue Bakayoko, Antonio Rudiger, Virgil van Dijk, Alex Sandro, and many more, but have so far only completed the free transfer of Willy Caballero.

Where will Lukaku end up? Can Chelsea snatch him out of United’s grasp? If he signs for Man Utd, who should Chelsea target? Let us know your thoughts.
