‘Big Six’ rivals Chelsea and Manchester are reportedly set to battle it out for the signature of RB Leipzig defender Dayot Upamecano, with both sides keen to bolster their defensive ranks.
The French international has caught the eye of a number of Europe’s top sides following some standout displays in both the Bundesliga and the Champions League over the last few seasons, the 22-year-old helping Julian Nagelsmann’s side reach the semi-finals of the latter competition last term.
The central defender has been integral to the rise of the German side in recent years, with his speed and ability to bring the ball out from the back a real asset.
Such qualities have led to rumours of a potential move to a ‘bigger’ club for Upamecano, with the former Red Bull Salzburg man seemingly destined to leave Leipzig this summer.
As per MEN, Manchester United are one of the sides keen on making a move for the defender, with the report suggesting that Leipzig are willing to continue cashing on their sought-after stars, as they have done previously with the likes of Timo Werner and Naby Keita.
The player is contracted to the club until 2023, yet a reported £40m release clause could come into effect at the end of the season, with United keen to trigger it.
The Red Devils have been linked with a move for a new central defender in recent season despite splashing out £80m for Harry Maguire in 2019, with the club keen on signing a suitable partner for their captain, as both Victor Lindelof and Eric Bailly continue to struggle for consistency.
United aren’t the only Premier League side setting their sights on Upamecano, however, with the Daily Mail reporting that Chelsea are also interested in making a move this summer.
The Blues spent over £200m on new additions last summer, yet it would appear that their ongoing rebuild isn’t quite done yet, with boss Frank Lampard still keen on bolstering his defence and midfield
The London club have been linked with a move for Declan Rice to slot into a holding midfield role, while they continue their hunt for a quality centre-back addition.
Lampard’s current preferred pairing is that of Thiago Silva and Kurt Zouma, although at 36, the former man is not a long-term option, while the likes of Antonio Rudiger, Andreas Christensen and Fikayo Tomori all face uncertain futures at Stamford Bridge.
Both Chelsea and United will have fight on their hands to snap up Upamecano, however, with the likes of Bayern Munich, Barcelona and Real Madrid also interested.
