Chelsea opt-out fee in Sancho deal revealed

Chelsea will need to pay Manchester United a fee of ยฃ5m if the club renege on their obligation to sign on-loan winger Jadon Sancho.

Sancho signed for Chelsea on loan last summer with the obligatory inclusion of a ยฃ25m purchase option.

The winger has faded following an impressive start at Chelsea, who are understood to be reconsidering the deal. As part of the agreement, Chelsea included an opt-out compensation fee.

The Athletic are reporting that Chelsea must pay a fee of ยฃ5m if the West Londoners decide against signing Sancho. That figure would take the overall cost of the loan to ยฃ10m for the season including wages. There was no initial loan fee in the deal.

Sancho has failed to score and has provided just one assist in his last 18 appearances for Chelsea.

It continues an unhappy time in English football for the 24-year-old, who has struggled to make an impact since his ยฃ72.9m transfer to Manchester United from Borussia Dortmund. He spent the second half of last season on loan at Dortmund after falling out of favour at Old Trafford.

United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe discussed the Sancho deal in an interview with the BBC earlier this month.

He opened up on United’s outstanding payments for players and said the Red Devils still owe ยฃ17m for Sancho this summer.

“For Sancho, who obviously now plays for Chelsea, and we pay half his wages, we are paying ยฃ17m to buy him in the summer,” said Ratcliffe.
