Chelsea’s on-loan midfielder Matteo Kovacic has said that Paul Scholes is one of the best midfielders the world has ever seen, and admitted that even now, he still watches his highlights.
There has often been a debate among fans about who has been the best ever Premier League midfielder, with Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard often the two that people argue over, however, many of the games great and good – including the iconic Zinedine Zidane – have often selected former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes as their choice.
Having played with a number of top-drawer midfielders during his time at Real Madrid, Chelsea’s Matteo Kovacic should know a thing or two about how to spot a top class player, and refused to select Chelsea legend Lampard as one of his favourites by also jumping on the Paul Scholes bandwagon, describing him as a ‘modern midfielder’ and saying that he is ‘one of the best ever’:
“Every player has to be himself — but for me Scholes was one of the best ever,” Kovacic told the Sun.
“He was amazing. I still enjoy watching his videos on YouTube.
“Sometimes I go home and watch him to learn something new.
“He had everything, he was the modern midfielder — scoring goals, defending well, tackling. I don’t copy anybody but I do like to watch Scholes. I also watch other players to see what I can do better.
“Players like Luka Modric and Andres Iniesta, too.”
Kovacic has got off to a decent start to his career at Stamford Bridge, starting three of the Blues five Premier League games this season.
