Chelsea are reportedly leading Manchester United in the race to sign Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane this summer.
Varane’s future in the Spanish capital remains uncertain with the centre-back set to enter the final year of his contract with the club this summer, recent reports having suggested the 28-year-old is keen on a new challenge after a decade at the Bernabeu.
The France international has been a long-term target for Manchester United and has been linked with a move to Old Trafford, whilst Paris Saint-Germain are also understood to be interested in signing the four-time Champions League winner.
According to Mundo Deportivo, however, Chelsea are leading the race for the defender’s signature as Thomas Tuchel looks to overhaul his options at centre-back this summer.
Thiago Silva’s contract is set to expire at the end of the season with no decision made on a renewal, whilst Kurt Zouma has struggled to win favour since the German’s arrival as head coach in January.
Chelsea are reportedly willing to spend €70m to sign the defender at the end of the season, with Real also keen to raise funds in potential pursuits of Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappe.
The reliability of Mundo Deportivo is questionable, but a lack of progress on contract talks points towards a potential exit for Varane who has made 357 appearances and won 18 trophies since arriving at Real Madrid as a teenager.
Varane is expected to form part of the side as Real Madrid face Chelsea in the Champions League semi-finals tomorrow evening.
