Chelsea ‘haven’t given up’ on signing Lukaku after two failed bids

Chelsea ‘haven’t given up’ hope of re-signing Romelu Lukaku despite two failed bids for the Inter Milan forward.

Thomas Tuchel is looking to sign a leading centre-forward this summer as Chelsea look to challenge for the Premier League title next season, the west London side having been linked with a host of options at number nine.

Chelsea have most strongly been linked with a move for Borussia Dortmund sensation, Erling Haaland, though the Bundesliga side have repeatedly insisted that the Norwegian is not for sale this summer despite talks of a potential bid of £150 million.

Lukaku’s name has been regularly linked for a return to Stamford Bridge as a potential alternative, where he made just 15 goalless appearances across all competitions after signing for the Blues from Anderlecht as a teenager.

Following spells at Everton and Manchester United, the Belgium international has since developed into one of the most prolific forwards in European football and The Athletic are reporting that Chelsea retain hope of signing the 28-year-old this summer, despite having seen two bids rejected by Inter.

Lukaku has insisted he remains happy at the San Siro, where he has scored 64 goals in just 95 appearances across two seasons and was named as Serie A’s Most Valuable Player following Inter’s title success last season.

Inter’s financial issues mean Chelsea have not yet given up hope of signing Lukaku however, with the Nerazzurri still needing to reduce their wage bill and bring in funds despite the €60m sale of Achraf Hakimi to Paris Saint-Germain.

Reports in Italy have suggested that Inter could move for Atalanta forward Duvan Zapata should Lukaku leave this summer, with any potential move late in the window set to represent a club record fee for Chelsea.
