Chelsea have added Facundo Buonanotte to their Champions League squad, with the summer signing replacing the injured Dario Essugo.

Essugo has undergone surgery on a thigh issue picked up while representing Portugal u-21s during the international break. The midfielder is facing a significant spell on the sidelines, with Chelsea opting to replace Essugo in their Champions League squad.

Buonanotte initially missed out on a place in the European squad but has now been added and is available to face Bayern Munich tomorrow evening. The 20-year-old made his Chelsea debut at the weekend, featuring for 46 minutes in the draw with Brentford.

After completing his move from Brighton late in the transfer window, Buonanotte discussed his excitement at playing Champions League football before his initial snub.

“It’s a great step in my career,” he said at his unveiling.

“I’m really happy to be here and ready to offer as much as I can to the team and the staff. I’m sure it will be a positive season.”

“Of course, I’ll get the opportunity to play in the Champions League for the first time, which will be a great challenge. I’m really looking forward to this season and hopefully I can help the club to achieve its goals.”
