Chelsea coach Joe Cole admits training has been ‘dour’ this week

Joe Cole has revealed how the Chelsea have reacted behind the scenes to the drubbing inflicted on them last week by Manchester City.

The Blues bounced back with a win over Swedish outfit Malmo 2-1 in the first leg of their round of 32 Europa League tie, thanks to goals from Ross Barkley and Olivier Giroud either side of the half-time interval.

Cole, who recently took up a coaching role in Chelsea‘s academy, spoke ahead of kick-off about how the 6-0 defeat to Man City had affected the squad’s mood in training.

“As you can imagine it’s been pretty dour,” Cole said on BT Sport.

“After you get beat 6-0 in that fashion the only positive thing that can come out of it is the fact that you have to put the mirror on yourself as a team and as a club.

“There has been a lot of soul searching.”

The former Liverpool and West Ham midfielder also revealed that the side have recovered from the fallout, as evidenced by the result on Thursday night.

“There was a game on the day after with the second string against the under-23s, which was at good pace, high-energy game. So the boys are still at it.

“And they’re all focused on getting a result, a performance, a result more than anything.

“Tonight you want to see some energy, you want to see a response.

“It’s an away tie in Europe that you want to win and a good result will get us back on track.”
