Chelsea boss Maresca discusses difficult decision

Enzo Maresca has admitted it is a difficult decision to choose between in-form Chelsea forwards Nicolas Jackson and Christopher Nkunku.

Jackson has started the season in terrific form with four goals in five league games and netted twice during the 3-0 win at West Ham last weekend.

The Senegalese striker has recorded 13 goal involvements in his last 13 league appearances for Chelsea, as many as he managed in his previous 27 games.

Christopher Nkunku is competing for a place at centre-forward, however, and scored a hat-trick during the 5-0 midweek win over Barrow in the Carabao Cup. Nkunku endured an injury-hit debut season with the Blues but is back to full fitness and finding form. The Frenchman has scored six goals in all competitions and is averaging a goal every 55 minutes.

Maresca happy with Chelsea’s attacking options

Speaking at his pre-match press conference ahead of facing Brighton, Maresca said it is tough to select between Chelsea’s depth of forward talent. On how he has dealt with the selection process, he said: “Be honest with him and all of them [on when they are selected to play]. Probably I’ve told them since day one we cant play with seven attacking players.

“Jackson played in the Premier League, scored two goals. Nkunku played the other day and scored three.

“This is good because not one of them can drop that means that the other one, he can have more chances, thinking and knowing that it’s impossible for them to be at the same level for all season because it’s not possible.

“But it’s important that they compete with each other and they are ready when we give them minutes.”
