Chelsea agree £33m fee for Serie A defender

Chelsea have agreed a £33m deal for Antonio Rudiger according to reports.

Sky Sports are reporting that the Premier League Champions have agreed a £29m fee with AS Roma with a further £4.4m to be paid in add ons.

The German international will fly to England on Monday for a medical and to finalise personal terms on what is thought to be a five-year contract.

Chelsea are desperately short of numbers at the back following the departures of John Terry and Nathan Ake, and have been scouring Europe to bring in a new centre-half. Virgil van Dijk, Leonardo Bonucci and Kostas Manolas have all been linked with a Stamford Bridge switch.

It is in fact the links to Kostas Manolas which could make the deal for Rudiger happen. The Greek international was due in Russia earlier this week for a medical before signing with Roberto Mancini’s Zenit St Petersburg, however the defender didn’t arrive.

The potential breakdown of that deal has allowed Roma to accept this offer from Chelsea for Rudiger, who only moved to the Italian capital two years ago from Stuttgart. He has however gone on to become a top class defender and could become Chelsea’s first summer signing.
