Checking in on the title races in Europe’s top five leagues

We’re heading towards the run-in across Europe’s top leagues and the title races are heating up.

Here is how things stand in the Bundesliga, Premier League, La Liga, Ligue 1 and Serie A.

Bundesliga

  1. Bayern Munich – 55 points
  2. Bayer Leverkusen – 47 points
  3. Eintracht Frankfurt – 42 points
  4. RB Leipzig – 37 points

Bayer Leverkusen made history last season by dethroning Bayern Munich, but the German giants have bounced back this time around. Bayern boast an eight-point margin over the defending champions with just 12 points to go. At the weekend, the title rivals went head-to-head at the BayArena with Bayern weathering a Leverkusen storm to return home with a point.

Vincent Kompany is closing in on the Bundesliga title in his debut season in charge, in what would be a record-extending 34th crown for the Bavarians and 12th in the last 13 campaigns.

Premier League

  1. Liverpool – 60 points
  2. Arsenal – 53 points
  3. Nottingham Forest – 47 points
  4. Manchester City – 44 points

Liverpool lead the title race in England with a seven-point margin over nearest challengers Arsenal. Arne Slot has exceeded all expectations in his first season at Anfield, with the Reds strong favourites to get over the line.

Liverpool take on Aston Villa this evening and can increase the pressure on Arsenal with a win, the first of a potentially defining run for the Merseysiders. The clash with Villa is followed by a trip to the Etihad to face Man City before Newcastle arrive at Anfield before the end of the month.

Arsenal, runners-up to Manchester City in each of the last two campaigns, will be desperate to avoid a third straight season in second. However, season-ending injuries to Gabriel Jesus and Kai Havertz leave the Gunners without a recognised forward for the run-in.

Surprise package Nottingham Forest are third, ahead of champions Man City.

La Liga

  1. Barcelona – 51 points
  2. Real Madrid – 51 points
  3. Atletico Madrid – 50 points
  4. Athletic Bilbao – 45 points

The La Liga title race is the tastiest in Europe right now. Stumbles for both Madrid clubs at the weekend saw Barcelona reclaim top spot on goal difference with a nervy 1-0 win over Rayo Vallecano on Monday night.

There’s just a point between the top three, while an impressive Athletic Bilbao outfit are just six points from the summit. It’s an incredible achievement from Ernesto Valverde, given the club’s Basque-only recruitment policy. Bilbao have not won La Liga since 1984.

Ligue 1

  1. Paris Saint-Germain – 56 points
  2. Marseille – 46 points
  3. Nice – 40 points
  4. AS Monaco – 40 points

Paris Saint-Germain look like continuing their domestic dominance in France. The champions boast a 10-point lead over Marseille, the largest across Europe’s top five leagues.

PSG’s unrivalled resources have made French football largely uncompetitive in recent seasons, despite shock title wins for Monaco and Lille across the last decade. This campaign appears to be heading the way of the capital club.

Serie A

  1. Napoli – 56 points
  2. Inter Milan – 54 points
  3. Atalana – 51 points
  4. Juventus – 46 points

Serie A is arguably the most competitive of Europe’s top five leagues with four different title winners in the last five seasons.

There are just five points between the current top three, with Atalanta looking to keep pace with Napoli and Inter. Atalanta won the Europa League last season to lift their first major trophy in 61 years and are now targeting a maiden Scudetto.

However, a Napoli side revitalised under serial winner Antonio Conte will be tough to catch. Conte has re-energised the Neapolitans despite the exits of Victor Osimhen and
Khvicha Kvaratskhelia.

Inter Milan, meanwhile, are perhaps the team to beat as the holders look to defend their crown.
