What a sensational two weeks of Champions League action, but sadly eight teams have become four, as we prepare for the semi-finals.
Liverpool blew Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City away 5-1 on aggregate, all thanks to the terrific first leg display at Anfield.
However the two games of the round were involving La Liga giants Real Madrid and Barcelona. The Catalan club looked to have one foot in the semi-finals after beating Roma 4-1 at the Nou Camp, but a sensational comeback from the a Italian’s in the second leg saw them progress on away goals.
There was another stirring Italian comeback as Juventus overturned a 3-0 deficit to bring the tie against Real Madrid on the brink of extra time, until the last minute controversies which saw Gigi Buffon sent off and Cristiano Ronaldo score yet another Champions League goal to send the European champions through.
Bayern Munich were the other side to progress after their 2-1 aggregate victory over Manchester United’s conqueror’s Sevilla.
Out of all the sides left in the hat, Liverpool were probably hoping to avoid being drawn against Real Madrid, and the Reds not only got their way, in that respect, but were given probably their dream draw by being picking out to play against Roma – which of course will see Mo Salah play against his former club.
