Centre-back the focus for Man United ahead of summer window

Manchester United will prioritise the signing of two new centre-backs ahead of the summer transfer window.

The Red Devils’ rebuild will continue with defensive additions in the summer with Bremer, of Juventus, topping the club’s centre-back shortlist.

New investors Ineos, fronted by Sir Jim Ratcliffe, have began work rebuilding the structure behind the scenes with the appointment of Omar Berrada from Manchester City as chief executive and the pursuit of Newcastle’s Dan Ashworth to become Director of Football.

On the pitch, the focus will be on improving a poor recent record in terms of recruitment after a series of failed signings at Old Trafford.

Centre-back is viewed as an area of weakness with doubts surrounding the futures of Harry Maguire, Victor Lindelof and Raphael Varane. Lisandro Martinez has also struggled with injury problems this season and reinforcements are required.

Bremer has emerged as the top target after a strong season at Juventus, though the Red Devils are likely to face significant competition for the Brazil international. iNews are reporting that Real Madrid are monitoring his performances this season and Chelsea and Spurs have also been linked.

Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite – who is expected to earn a first call-up to the England squad for March’s international fixtures when Gareth Southgate names his squad later today – is also of interest.

The 21-year-old is viewed as a potential long-term solution at the heart of the defence, given his age, physical presence and comfortability on the left-side of a central pairing.

Everton, however, could demand a record sale, eclipsing the £75m fee that took Romelu Lukaku from Merseyside to Manchester United in 2017.
