Carrick confirms Man Utd star will return ‘very, very soon’

The player was dealt a knock ahead of Manchester United's opening game against Hull.

Michael Carrick provided an injury update on his Man Utd squad ahead of facing Hull City this weekend, revealing that Mason Mount will be back in action “very, very soon”.

The Red Devils travel to the MKM Stadium on Saturday to take on the newly promoted Tigers, with kickoff set for 12.30pm BST.

Mount, who has struggled with injury problems since moving to Old Trafford from Chelsea in 2023, is a doubt heading into the match. But Carrick says the midfielder is recovering from a knock and does not have a serious issue.

Carrick confirms Man Utd star will return ‘very, very soon’

“First of all, Mason is a top player,” the Man Utd boss said at his pre-match press conference. “We have seen that so far. Pre-season, he was one of our best players in the early stages in the games that he played. I thought he was fantastic, not surprising given what I have seen before, what I expect and what I know of him.

“He has picked up a bit of a knock, there are no dramas. It is nothing major. Of course, he has missed some football over recent years, and he wants to be fit and wants to be in that full rhythm and wants stay fit, so we’re doing our best to help him do that, but he is a top player, Mason.

“The same as recovery, we have got to manage the squad, there are going to be injuries through the season, and we have to have a squad that is strong enough to have a really good top starting team with depth to carry us through the season. Mason will be back very, very soon. If not immediately.”

While Mount is “touch and go” to face Hull, Carrick did confirm that Matthijs De Ligt, Benjamin Sesko and backup goalkeeper Karl Darlow have returned to training after recovering from injury.

“Karl has trained this week, he is back training, so he is in good shape,” he said.

“Matthijs has been out for a long period of time, but he is training. Great to have him back. He won’t be involved, but he’s in good shape and moving in a good direction, so that is a good bonus for us really.

“Ben is back training, so that’s another positive and looking forward to having him back around the ground and getting him some minutes as well.

“Managing Mason a little bit, but he is very close, so it is touch and go for the weekend really and going into next week.”
