Michael Carrick has said he will ‘always do what was best for the football club’ when asked if Bruno Fernandes could be stripped of the Manchester United captaincy.
Fernandes’ role as captain has come into question after the midfielder questioned Carrick’s tactics, in an interview that followed United’s 4-1 Champions League defeat at Como.
The Portugal international criticised a lack of bravery from his side, with his public unhappiness having led to criticism of the midfielder.
Ahead of facing Bournemouth this weekend, Carrick refused to speak about conversations with the 32-year-old or whether he would consider changing captain. However, he did say he would always put the club’s interests first.
Asked about the club’s current struggles, amid a seven-game winless run, Carrick told his pre-match press conference that United have the ‘resilience’ to turn things around.
“The foundations of this football club and values have been etched down for many years,” he said.
“I totally understand and I get every single one of them. It comes down to being humble, to hard work and being really proud to live up to those values.
“There is a resilience about this football club that has been shown for a long, long time. Whether that’s bouncing back from adversity, comebacks, late goals, sustaining success, there is a resilience to this football club that runs very, very deep.”
