Jamie Carragher has given his backing to Jose Mourinho, but has insisted that the Portuguese must win ‘big trophies’ in order to keep his job.
Mourinho has cut a frustrated figure throughout pre-season, due to several of his high profile players being unavailable due to their exploits at the World Cup and an inability to land his main transfer targets.
Manchester United have only made one marquee signing so far this summer, with Brazil international Fred moving from Shakhtar Donetsk for £52 million. They club have also brought in young full-back Diogo Dalot and former Stoke ‘keeper Lee Grant, but crucially have so far missed out on the centre-back and winger that Mourinho craves.
Mourinho’s downbeat demeanour this summer, as well as their disappointing pre-season results, have led to speculation that the Portuguese could be sacked, but Carragher believes that United will stick with him – providing he wins trophies:
“He’s a winner and that’s why United got him,” Carragher told talkSPORT.
“Sometimes when I hear Untied fans moaning about the football, I think ‘what did you expect?’
“You brought him in to win. You accepted this great football was not going to happen.
“Mourinho always causes one or two problems off the pitch, that’s something he’s done throughout his career so again that was something you had to expect.
“It was all about winning.
“He’s got to do something big this season and win one of the big trophies, that will decide whether he stays or goes.”
