Long live the King.
Eric Cantona is reportedly set for a ‘sensational return to Manchester United’ – if, of course, an ambassadorial role at the club can at all be considered sensational.
The Manchester United hierarchy are believed to have already held talks regarding a potential return for Cantona, the former forward amongst the most popular and iconic players in the club’s history, having played an influential role in the early successes of the Sir Alex Ferguson era.
An ambassadorial role, a position currently held by other former Red Devils’ greats such as Bryan Robson and Peter Schmeichel, is being lined up for the Frenchman who won four league titles in five seasons at Old Trafford.
According to the Mirror, the ‘sensational’ return of Cantona involves the former number 7 making personal appearances and would add ‘star-studded appeal’ to the club’s brand, with the news described as a ‘huge lift’.
Cantona’s potential return is the club’s latest efforts to remain in touch and celebrate their past, or in the eyes of this cynic – a likely cheap attempt to point-score with supporters unhappy at the club’s current progress.
