Brighton ‘really lucky’ to have De Zerbi following win over Man United

Brighton midfielder Pascal Gross says the club are “really lucky” to have Roberto De Zerbi as manager after the Italian led his side to yet another win over Manchester United.

The German scored the Seagull’s second goal at Old Trafford on Saturday afternoon as they claimed their fourth consecutive victory over the Red Devils in the Premier League.

“We played a good game, we controlled it really well and deserved to win,” Gross told Premier League productions. The 32-year-old has now scored seven goals against Man United in his career.

“We needed to organise ourselves a little bit at the start as they played a different shape. But after we figured it out we were better defensively and were in control on the ball, found spaces and were dangerous on the attack.”

When asked what it was like to play under De Zerbi, Gross said. “We all enjoy it. We are really hungry, he is really hungry, everyone tries to get better as a team. We are really lucky to have him and we keep going.

After the game De Zerbi told Sky Sports that he felt equally fortunate to be the one leading Brighton. “I must admit I feel I know I’m very lucky to be this coach for this team,” he said.

“It’s like a dream because I am enjoying it a lot, enjoying to watch my team playing, showing their quality. It’s an honour, I’m proud.”

Danny Welbeck opened the scoring to haunt his former club, finding the net in the 20th minute. Rasmus Hojlund thought he had put Man United on level terms with his first goal for the club, but the ball was judged to have gone over the endline before Marcus Rashford passed it to the Dane.

Man United’s woes continued in the second half as Pascal Gross took advantage of some poor defending to strike home shortly after the interval. Substitute Joao Pedro put Brighton three up in the 71st minute not long after coming off the bench.

Hannibal Mejbri got one back for United just moments later, but they failed to make a contest of it in the final 20 minutes as De Zerbi’s men closed out a huge victory.
