Brighton boss Fabian Hurzeler responds to Man Utd links

The Seagulls manager has been linked with the United job in recent weeks.

Fabian Hurzeler says he is “fully focused” on his job as Brighton & Hove Albion manager amid reports linking him with Man Utd.

Michael Carrick’s position as head coach of the Red Devils is under increasing pressure following Wednesday’s 4-1 defeat to Como in the UEFA Champions League.

United have failed to win any of their last seven games in all competitions, leaving the club 13th in the Premier League table and Carrick in a precarious position.

Brighton, meanwhile, have enjoyed a stellar start to the campaign, winning five and losing just one of their opening seven games to put them third in the standings.

Their impressive performances mean Hurzeler is one of the names being put forward as a possible replacement for Carrick, alongside Unai Emery, Julian Nagelsmann, Antonio Conte and Eddie Howe.

But the German has brushed aside any suggestion he could leave Brighton as he is committed to the south coast club.

“I’m really focused on my job here,” Hurzeler said during Friday’s pre-match press conference ahead of the Seagull’s meeting with Liverpool at Anfield.

“I have no time to think about these rumours because we play every three days and, beside that, I have a lot of respect for Michael Carrick and what he has done with Manchester United the last season.

“He’s a great human being, a great personality. There’s nothing more to say about that.”

With Brighton flying so high in the Premier League, some are considering them as potential title contenders. But Hurzeler dismisses the suggestion out of hand.

“No! We go game by game, we try to focus on performance,” he said.

“Just yesterday I had a conversation with the players and I love the way they are thinking. They said ‘we don’t want to focus on results, we want to focus on performances and how we get better, how we can improve because then the results will come’.

“Then we can speak at the end of the season about where we are, where we should have been. But now it is solution-focused, process-orientated and trying to get the best out of the players.”
