Brentford XI vs Sunderland – Predicted lineup and team news

Brentford travel to the Stadium of Light on Wednesday evening looking to reach the EFL Cup quarter-finals for a third successive season.

Brentford travel to the Stadium of Light on Wednesday evening looking to reach the EFL Cup quarter-finals for a third successive season.

Keith Andrews’ side are sixth in the Premier League and remain unbeaten on their travels in the league this term, having come from behind to draw 1-1 at Hull City on Sunday, their fifth draw in eight matches this season. Brentford have lost just once in their last eight meetings with Sunderland in all competitions. Brentford suffered their first Premier League defeat of the season in a 2-1 home loss to Liverpool before taking a point at Hull, and they have reached the semi-finals of this competition as recently as 2020-21.

Brentford team news

Antoni Milambo, Joshua Dasilva and Kaye Furo all remain out through injury, and Yehor Yarmolyuk is serving the second match of a three-game suspension. Yarmolyuk’s ban followed a red card picked up in the defeat to Liverpool. Vitaly Janelt is available again after a one-match ban and could come into central midfield, with Aaron Hickey, used in an unfamiliar role against Hull, reverting to right-back. No further fitness concerns have been reported elsewhere in Andrews’ squad.

Fabio Carvalho scored in the third-round win at Reading and will hope to be involved again having been omitted from the squad entirely last weekend. Callum Wilson, another scorer against Reading, along with Mikkel Damsgaard, El Hadji Malick Diouf and Nathan Collins are also in contention to start. The EFL Cup remains a serious target for Brentford, who have progressed beyond the fourth round in four of the last six seasons, including back-to-back quarter-finals.
