Manchester United have been dealt a blow after Real Madrid announced that Raphael Varane has signed a new five year deal.

Varane has been one of Jose Mourinho’s top transfer targets since his arrival at Manchester United last summer, having worked with the French defender during his time as Real Madrid boss.

The 24-year-old is the latest Real Madrid star to commit his long term future to the club, following the likes of Marcelo, Karin Benzema, Isco and Dani Carvajal who have all signed contract extensions in the last few months

A statement on Real Madrid’s website reads:

“Real Madrid C. F. and Varane have agreed to extend the player’s contract, which will see him remain at the club until 30 June 2022.

“Tomorrow, Thursday, at 2pm, Varane will appear before the media in the press room of the Santiago Bernabeu stadium.”

Varane has already made seven appearances this season for Los Blancos, already winning two trophies, including the UEFA Super Cup against Mourinho’s United back in August and the Spanish Super Copa against Barcelona.
