Newcastle boss Rafa Benitez believes his sides victory over Watford will give his clubs players and fans confidence that they can start picking up points and moving away from the relegation zone.
Yesterday’s 1-0 win at St.James Park over Javi Gracia’s Hornets was Newcastle’s first win of the season and crucially moves the North East club up to 16th in the Premier League table and out of the drop zone.
Former Liverpool manager Benitez is optimistic that after a torrid start to the season his side can use yesterday’s win as evidence that they are capable of getting more positive results.
“I think [the win] was important for everyone,” said Benitez to BBC’s MOTD.
“To win against a good team with a lot of confidence, to win in the way that we did with everyone behind the team – and with three players coming from the bench and making a great contribution – was very positive.”
“It’s important for everyone to see that the team is capable to perform and compete,” added Benitez.
“If you are in a better position in the table, the players will have more confidence.”
Newcastle’s next game is also at home when they face Eddie Howe’s Bournemouth next Saturday.
