Benitez demands VAR after Newcastle defeat to Wolves

Rafael Benitez has demanded the introduction of VAR following Newcastle’s 2-1 defeat to Wolves this afternoon.

Wolves took the lead after just 17 minutes when Diogo Jota fired home for the visitors, but the lead was short-lived, with Ayoze Perez levelling the scores just six minutes later.

However, with the scores level, referee Mike Dean denied the hosts a penalty after Perez was apparently elbowed in the box, an incident which left Benitez furious.

“It was key to the game – the red card and the elbow on Ayoze Perez. We need VAR now,” Benitez told Sky Sports.

“In this game it would have changed everything.

“We were doing enough to control the game. How can you explain those decisions to all our fans? We did everything we could do for winning this game.”

Benitez’s anger was compounded in the 57th minute, when DeAndre Yedlin was shown a straight red card for fouling Diogo Jota on the edge of the area, before Matt Doherty scored a 93rd minute winner for the visitors, much to the dismay of the Spaniard.

“You can guarantee to me that the player in the corner of the box can score in the top corner every time? It cannot be a red card.

“We have lost three points today and we deserve to win.”
