Rafa Benitez has admitted his players are happier after securing last weekend’s victory over Watford.
The Newcastle manager said that the three substitutes who came on: Ki Sung-yueng, Fabian Schar and Ayoze Perez were also key in getting their first win of the Premier League season.
Magpies boss Benitez feels there is a lighter atmosphere around the club now as the players and staff have had a weight lifted from their shoulders.
“After an important win everyone is a bit happier, and hopefully we can carry on with this feeling,” Benitez told his Friday press conference.
“The contribution of the three players coming from the bench… was key to us getting the three points.”
Although Benitez is bound to be calling on his bench on plenty of occasions throughout the rest of this season, he was unable to add any significant depth to his squad due to Mike Ashley’s refusal to invest in the squad over the summer months.
Benitez faces a long, tough road ahead in his quest to keep Newcastle in the Premier League however. He has quickly become a figure for Geordies to worship and Newcastle fans everywhere know that the longer Mike Ashley remains owner of the club, the less chance a high-calibre manager like Benitez is going to stay and work under those conditions.
Newcastle face Bournemouth at home on Saturday as they look to make it two league wins in a row.
