Benitez calls on Newcastle to be ‘stronger mentally’

Rafa Benitez has called on his Newcastle squad to be mentally stronger and show more character in games for the second half of the season.

Benitez watched on as his team suffered a heavy 4-0 defeat on Wednesday away to Liverpool, but felt they should have performed better due to the amount of preparation they had put in.

“I was convinced we could get something with the way we prepared, but these kind of mistakes make it difficult to manage against any team, especially a team like Liverpool,” Benitez told a press conference today.

“We have to be stronger mentally and show more character to stay in the game.”

Newcastle play Watford this weekend at Vicarage Road and then they are then at home to a rejuvenated Manchester United on Wednesday night.

The Magpies are 15th in the league, five points above the relegation zone.

Benitez’s side have won four of their last nine games. This has to be considered a huge improvement in form as it was November before the St James’ Park outfit managed to pick up their first league win of the season.
