Bayern to rival Premier League clubs for free agent forward

Bayern Munich are long-standing admirers of Jonathan David and are prepared to rival Premier League clubs for the forward next summer.

David looks set to leave Lille on a free transfer with his contract to expire at the end of the current campaign. The Canada international is keeping his options open with leading clubs across Europe interested in his signing as a free agent.

He has scored 97 goals in 202 appearances across all competitions for Lille, including 13 in 18 games this season. That return includes four in the Champions League with only Robert Lewandowski, Raphinha, Harry Kane and Viktor Gyokeres having outscored the 24-year-old in the competition. Only two players have scored more in Ligue 1 than David, who has averaged a goal every 117 minutes in France so far this season.

According to Sky Germany, Bayern Munich director of sport Max Eberl has tracked the progress of the Canadian for several seasons and the German giants are readying an offer.

Bayern want to bring in ‘a strong backup’ for Harry Kane amid doubts surrounding the future of Mathys Tel, who is keen to secure more regular first-team football. The 19-year-old has featured for just 112 minutes in the Bundesliga this season and is open to an exit to aid his development.

Chelsea, Spurs, and West Ham have been heavily linked with signing David, while there’s strong interest in the player from Italy, with Inter and Juventus keen on a summer deal.

David is the joint-leading scorer in the history of the Canadian national team and helped the national side to the Copa America semi-finals in the summer.
