Alonso has been named as the early frontrunner to replace Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool, following the announcement that the latter with step down from his role at Anfield in the summer.
Liverpool’s owners are understood to have been impressed with the performances of Alonso in his first senior coaching role at Leverkusen.
The Spaniard’s side are unbeaten in 31 games in all competitions this season and beat title rivals Bayern Munich 3-0 at the weekend to move five points clear at the top of the Bundesliga. Leverkusen have never previously been crowned champions in Germany and Alonso’s exploits have alerted several top clubs.

The Bavarians face missing out on the German title for the first time since 2012 this season and are reportedly open to bringing in the coach who is masterminding the challenge of their Bundesliga title rivals.
Alonso spent time with both Bayern and Liverpool during his playing career and remains a popular figure at each club. The 42-year-old is regarded as one of the brightest coaching prospects in world football and Liverpool will be concerned that significant rival interest in his services has emerged.
