Bayern Munich take on Freiburg in their upcoming Bundesliga match on Sunday, with the game shaping up as a meeting between two of the league’s leading sides, as both teams are placed inside the top three.
Bayern remain unbeaten in domestic competition and occupy second place in the Bundesliga standings. Their attacking form has been exceptional, underlined by an emphatic 6-1 win against RB Leipzig and a dominant 7-0 rout of Union Berlin in recent matches. Vincent Kompany’s side have looked in outstanding condition, although they were made to work hard in a 2-2 Champions League draw with Arsenal in midweek. At present, Bayern are producing the highest goal tally in the league while also maintaining strong defensive discipline.
Bayern Munich team news
Bayern, however, face an extraordinary selection emergency before taking on SC Freiburg, with six important players and manager Vincent Kompany all unavailable. Kompany was admitted to hospital on Friday after collapsing because of a serious viral illness, meaning assistant coach Aaron Danks will oversee the team temporarily.
On the field, goalkeeper Manuel Neuer is still out with ongoing irritation in a foot tendon, which opens the door for young goalkeeper Jonas Urbig to start. Bayern’s midfield options have also been badly hit: Aleksandar Pavlović was withdrawn late on Saturday because of a calf problem, while Joshua Kimmich will not feature for personal reasons following a death in his family.
In addition, Kim Min-jae and Luis Díaz picked up major muscle injuries in the midweek Champions League stalemate against Arsenal, with Díaz expected to be absent for around six weeks.
Jamal Musiala continues to recover from a thigh muscle tear. The only encouraging news for Bayern is the possible return of Michael Olise.
