Bayern Munich hint at surprise coaching candidate

Bayern Munich director of sport Max Erbl has said the club have not approached any coaches regarding replacing Thomas Tuchel at the end of the season.

Tuchel will leave Bayern Munich at the end of the campaign after a mutual decision was made for the German to depart, following a disappointing domestic campaign that has the Bundesliga champions 10 points behind Bayer Leverkusen in the title race.

Leverkusen boss Xabi Alonso has been named as a leading candidate for the role, though Bayern will face competition from Liverpool who are also considering the 42-year-old as a replacement for Jurgen Klopp.

Erbl said Bayern are yet to make an approach for any coach, including Alonso, and suggested there are names on their shortlist that have not been circulated in the media.

“I haven’t spoken with any coach and haven’t received any approval or rejection,” Erberl told BILD.

“Xabi played for FC Bayern. But I don’t want to provoke headlines: ‘Xabi fits with Bayern!’. I’m just talking about him knowing this club.

“Maybe in the end our best decision would be to hire a coach who hasn’t been rumoured in the media. Yes, there are names on the list that haven’t been rumoured in the media.”

Erbl also ruled out a move for outgoing Liverpool boss Klopp, insisting he will respect the German’s desire to take a break from the game.

“I will not call Jurgen Klopp to offer our job.

“I know what it means when Kloppo said: I’m running out of energy. Few people can judge that better than me, because I went through it. That’s why I’m not going to call him.”
