Bayern manager search takes twist following Premier League rejection

Bayern Munich have turned to a familiar face in their hunt for a new manager after being snubbed by a current Premier League boss.

The Bundesliga side have been searching in vain for someone to replace Thomas Tuchel after it was announced in February the former Chelsea boss would leave the club at the end of the season.

A number of high-profile candidates have rejected the chance to join Bayern, such as Xabi Alonso, Julian Nagelsmann and ex-Manchester United interim manager Ralf Rangnick, instead choosing to remain at their current posts.

The latest manager to rebuff the Bavarian outfit’s advances is Oliver Glasner, according to multiple reports this week.

Bayern enquired about the Crystal Palace boss after an impressive first three months in south London, but the 49-year-old is said to be happy where he is while the club made it clear he would not be released.

That has led Bayern to turn to Hansi Flick, with whom they have “opened talks”, according to The Athletic. The 59-year-old won the Uefa Champions League and successive league titles during his spell in charge of the club between 2019 and 2021.

Flick left FC Hollywood to take over the German national team ahead of the 2022 Fifa World Cup in Qatar, but he is currently out of work after being becoming the first Germany head coach to be sacked last year.

Bayern have also shown interest in a number of Premier League managers over the last few months, including Man United boss Erik ten Hag, although those links appear to have faded following his side’s 4-0 defeat to Palace on Monday.

Aston Villa’s Unai Emery was said to be one of their targets, but the Midlands club tied the Spaniard down to a new deal until 2027.

Roberto De Zerbi appeared to be out of the running amid a disappointing second half of the season with Brighton, but sporting director Max Eberl is “still fighting” to hire the Italian, according to BILD’s Christian Falk.

Former Wolves boss Julen Lopetegui turned down an approach from Bayern this month as he looks set to replace David Moyes at West Ham United.
