Barcelona worried that Man Utd or Man City will pay star’s £50m release clause

Barcelona are worried that Manchester United or Manchester City are about to launch a bid to sign defender, Samuel Umtiti.

Umtiti has developed into a key player for the Catalan club following his £21m move from Lyon in 2016, making 62 appearances for the club so far, scoring one goal.

He has developed a good partnership with Gerard Pique and has helped create the meanest defence in La Liga, conceding only seven goals.

However, according to Spanish publication Don Balon, the news that Liverpool had agreed to pay an astonishing £75m for Virgil van Dijk sparked fears in the Nou Camp that one of the Manchester clubs may try to sign Umtiti in a bid to bolster their own defences.

The French international has a release clause in his contract set at just £50m, a fee well within the reaches of the top Premier League clubs, and the van Dijk deal has proven how much the English clubs are able to stretch their finances to snap up the best talent.

Umtiti is currently out injured with a hamstring injury, but is set to return at the end of January, meaning that the clubs would have to take a risk on him if they want to trigger the release clause in next months transfer window.
