Barcelona are progressing in talks with Ilkay Gundogan as the club look to sign the Manchester City midfielder on a free transfer.
Gundogan is set to become a free agent this summer as the 32-year-old approaches the end of his contract at the Etihad, with Barcelona having been in negotiations with the midfielder over a move to the Spanish side.
The Germany international is viewed as an ideal target to strengthen the club’s midfield, as Barcelona again look for cost-efficient additions given the economic issues at the Camp Nou.
The Catalans have a long-term interest in signing Bernardo Silva from the Premier League champions, but Gundogan has emerged as a more attainable target as Xavi looks to add depth in midfield.
Sport are reporting that Barcelona are progressing in talks over a two-year deal for Gundogan, who is keen on the move despite the offer of a contract extension at Manchester City. City’s proposal is for a one-year renewal, less than on offer in Catalonia.
Gundogan has won four Premier League titles since signing for City in a £20m deal in 2016, as the midfielder became the first signing of the Pep Guardiola era.
He is understood to be open to a new challenge in La Liga after seven seasons of success in England, provided Barcelona can navigate the club’s Financial Fair Play issues and register his arrival.
