Tottenham Hotspur defender Toby Alderweireld’s future has been the subject of much media coverage in recent weeks, and that speculation has only further intensified with the news that Spanish giants Barcelona are set to battle it out with Premier League duo Chelsea and Manchester United for the talented centre-backs signature.

The Belgium international’s contract talks with Spurs have broken down recently. With The Independent now reporting that the players representives are said to be using Virgil Van Dijk’s deal at Liverpool, as a benchmark for what top defenders should be earning.

The Anfield club’s record signing is rumoured to be on £180,000 a week, a wage Spurs are unwilling to match, as it would break rigid pay structure.

Barca are said to be monitoring the 28-year-old’s situation closely as they look to add defensive reinforcements to their squad next summer.

Alderweireld joined Spurs in 2015 from La Liga side Atletico Madrid and has blossomed into one of Europe’s top ball playing centre-backs.
