Barcelona are on the lookout for a new central defender according to reports in Spain, with Samuel Umtiti looking closer to moving to Manchester United than staying in Catalonia.
Manchester United are known to be on the lookout for a new central defender, with Umtiti one of three names that seem to be most strongly linked with a move to Old Trafford.
Spurs defender Toby Alderweireld is one of those names having seemingly fallen out of favour under Mauricio Pochettino while Real Madrid’s Raphael Varane is the other. Jose Mourinho is known to be a big admirer of the Frenchman, having been the man to sign him during his time as Madrid manager back in 2011.
However, in recent days, talk of a move from United for Umtiti has increased, with some some suggestions that Barcelona are not prepared to offer the Frenchman anywhere near what Manchester United are prepared to offer.
Despite Barcelona being desperate to keep hold of the France international, they would be powerless to keep him thanks to the €60 million release clause in the former Lyon defender’s contract.
Now, in a fresh report in Spanish publication Sport, the La Liga leaders are thought to be on the lookout for potential replacements for the 24-year-old should he ultimately decide to quit the Camp Nou.
Barcelona director Robert Fernandez went to both of the Netherland’s international friendlies, as well as Ajax’s last Eredivisie match to watch 18-year-old centre back Matthijs De Ligt in action.
It is also claimed that RB Leipzig’s highly-rated French defender Dayot Upamecano, 19, is another option.
