Manchester United’s Eric Bailly and Chelsea’s Gary Cahill are on a list of transfer targets for Arsenal who are looking to bolster their defensive ranks.
Arsenal are currently enjoying a fine 21 game unbeaten run which has seen them move to the brink of the top four, as well as comfortably progressing to the knockout stages of the Europa League.
It has, however, been a run of results that has been built on the attacking prowess of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and co. rather than their defensive solidity, which in spite the additions of the experienced duo Sokratis Papastapopoulos and Stephan Lichtsteiner in the summer is still showing signs of fragility.
However, with Rob Holding suffering a season-ending injury, the Daily Mirror are reporting that the North London outfit will try to sign a new central defender in the upcoming January transfer window, and have identified Chelsea‘s 32-year-old outcast Gary Cahill, Real Valladolid’s Fernando Calero, and Manchester United‘s Eric Bailly as potential targets.
Cahill has fallen out of favour under Maurizio Sarri at Stamford Bridge, playing just 21 minutes of Premier League football, with the majority of his game time coming in the cup competitions.
Bailly meanwhile has struggled with a number of injuries during his time at Old Trafford, but recently returned to action against the Gunners, putting in a man of the match display and keeping Aubameyang quiet.
However, the report adds that a move for Calero is the most likely, with the 23-year-old having a £10 million release clause in his contract at Real Valladolid.
