Thomas Partey is reportedly ‘open’ to a move to Arsenal this summer as the club prepare a deal to bring the Atletico Madrid midfielder to the Premier League.
The Ghana international has emerged as the Gunners’ number one transfer target this summer as Mikel Arteta seeks to improve his midfield options at the Emirates, with 26-year-old possessing a release clause of around £45m in his contract at the Spanish side.
According to the Telegraph, Partey has ‘made it clear he would like to move to Arsenal‘ after spending five seasons in the Spanish capital, with the midfielder harbouring ambitions of proving himself in English football and the Premier League.
Despite the current financial uncertainty in football due to the coronavirus crisis, Partey’s release clause makes him both attainable and good value as the north London side consider their options in the market, though swap deals have also been mooted with Alexandre Lacazette a player believed to have interested Atletico in recent months.
Arteta views Partey as a player who can add bite and athleticism to his midfield after impressing for Diego Simeone’s side in recent seasons, playing a key role in Atletico’s Champions League elimination of Liverpool in March.
However, the same newspaper also runs an article today claiming that the Gunners are set to be ‘hit hardest’ if the entirety of next season is played behind closed doors due to the ongoing pandemic, a ‘large proportion’ of the clubs income coming from matchday revenue which could potentially cost them £878.2 million.
The club have already announced a 12.5% paycut with the majority of their squad and coaching staff.
