Atletico Madrid are set to make a new bid for Cristian Romero, once the sale of Matteo Ruggeri to Aston Villa is confirmed.
The Spanish side are set to sell Ruggeri to Aston Villa in a transfer worth £21.4m, with negotiations between the clubs advanced. The departure of Ruggeri, and Nahuel Molina who is nearing a transfer to AS Roma, will free funds to pursue Tottenham Hotspur captain Romero.
Romero is keen to quit North London and favours a move to Spain over Italy, with Inter Milan also monitoring his situation. Arsenal have also been linked with a bold raid on their North London rivals, though Spurs will resist all approaches from the Premier League champions.
According to Sky Sports, Atletico are ready to pay up to £38.5m for the Argentina international, though it’s unclear whether Spurs would do business at that price. Spurs are prepared to let Romero leave this summer, following the arrivals of Jan Paul van Hecke and Marcos Senesi.
The 28-year-old has criticised the club’s board on several occasions across the last 12 months, following a 17th-place finish in each of the last two Premier League campaigns.
