Full-back Ashley Cole has revealed who his two favourite managers at Chelsea were during his time at the Premier League club.
The Derby County player spent eight successful seasons at Stamford Bridge, winning three Premier League titles and the Champions League, while playing under a myriad of different managers.
When who was his favourite of the bunch, Cole predictably namechecked Carlo Ancelotti, who won the double in his first season with Chelsea, but threw in a surprise candidate for his favoured boss: Luis Felipe Scolari
“I enjoyed Scolari and Ancelotti, probably my favourite two,” Cole revealed to Sky Sports MNF.
The World Cup-winning manager’s time at Chelsea was short-lived, getting the sack just seven months into the 2008-09 season, but he left an indelible impression on the England international at the time.
“I think Scolari [is my favourite], he came at a time when I wasn’t playing as well as I knew I could when I first came to Chelsea — I wasn’t the Ashley Cole they knew at Arsenal.
“He came and he brought this new lease of life, it was like playing for Brazil. He had me bombing up and down against players like Jamie Carragher, with [Jose] Bosingwa on the other side.
“We had no rules, we could go where we wanted, left and right backs going at the same time. We were playing great football, but by December it had petered out and he got the sack.”
The Brazilian’s laissez-faire attitude to tactics is perhaps one of the reasons he did not last very long in the job, but Cole is a fan nonetheless.
