Mikel Arteta could be set to turn down the chance to manage his former club Arsenal due to concern over a lack of control over transfer policy.
According to a report in the Daily Express Gunners legend Patrick Vieira was also interviewed for the role of Arsene Wenger’s successor, but became alarmed that any new boss at the Emirates would have very little input over potential transfer targets.
Arsenal’s new behind the scenes setup means that former Borussia Dortmund super scout Sven Mislintat and the clubs new Director of Football relations Raul Sanllehi, who was recently recruited from Barcelona, will have the final call on any recruitment decisions.
As Vieira and Arteta are both still technically employed by the Abu Dhabi group that owns New York City FC and Manchester City, they are said to have discussed the reality of the new structure at the Emirates, and Arteta is now said to be considering rejecting the chance to manage the Gunners.
As we have already reported, Arsenal have also made a last ditch move for former PSG boss Unai Emery – although Arteta still remains the favourite with most bookmakers.
