Mikel Arteta comments on Arsenal transfer plans in January window

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta says the club’s “focus” is on the players they already have as the January transfer window opened for business.ย

The Spaniard was speaking shortly after watching his side ring in the new year with a 3-1 win at Brentford in the Premier League to retain second place in the table.

Gabriel Jesus cancelled out Bryan Mbeumo’s opener in the first half, before Mikel Merino and Gabriel Martinelli both scored in quick succession following the interval.

“We won in a difficult stadium, against a good opponent,” Arteta told TNT Sports after the full-time whistle.

“The record they have here is incredible and when you go 1-0 down it makes it even harder. We have to navigate through some difficult moments.

“We started really fast and aggressive and again adapting. We had some injuries and sickness and we had to play some different players.”

With the January transfer window opening on the same day of the match, Arteta was asked about the club’s plans for the month, with the 42-year-old hinting that Arsenal don’t intend on adding too many new faces.

“At the moment it is looking after the players and get the best out of them. At the moment our focus is our players,” he said.

“I really like my players and I believe in what we have as there’s a lot of quality and commitment.”

Much of the transfer talk around Arsenal centres on the need for a new number nine, but Arteta says that the current form of Jesus and his other goalscorers is “very important” for the team.

“Today Martinelli scored and Mikel scored from a set-piece. In the last calendar year you see who has scored for us and that’s our strength,” he said.
