Arsenal and West Ham have made a surprise move for Barcelona defender Thomas Vermaelen according to reports in Spain today.

Spanish publication Sport claim that Arsene Wenger has made a move to re-sign the Belgian defender who has failed to make an impact at the Nou Camp since he left the Gunners back in 2014. It says that the defender, who is free to decide his own future, has an offer on the table from Arsenal, as well as West Ham United.

Following his move to Barcelona, Vermaelen suffered a serious injury which restricted him to a single appearance in his debut season. He has since gone on to make a further 20 appearances and scored one goal.

The defender has been relegated to fifth choice at the Nou Camp, behind Gerard Pique, Javier Mascherano, Jeremy Mathieu and new signing Samuel Umtiti.

He has been linked with numerous moves away from the club this summer, with Liverpool and Roma speculated to make a move for the 30-year old centre-back.
