Arsenal have moved ahead of Chelsea in the race to sign Bayer Leverkusen youngster, Leon Bailey according to the Mirror today. The youngster has been linked with a move to Stamford Bridge over the last few weeks, after he scored eight goals in 16 Bundesliga appearances so far this season.
The Daily Mirror claim that Arsenal have sent scouts to watch him on two occasions this week. They were impressed with the Jamaican last Sunday during a 4-4 draw against Hannover, a game in which he scored twice, and were impressed again in midweek as he put in a good performance against Borussia Moenchengladbach in the DfB Cup.
Chelsea have been heavily linked with the youngster as Antonio Conte wants to boost his attacking options, while Man Utd are also thought to be interested. It is thought that the Blues had a £22m bid for the winger rejected by Leverkusen last week.
However the report now claims that Arsenal have overtaken their Premier League rivals in the race to sign him and are willing to pay £30m for his services.
Arsene Wenger has already sold Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and is also set to sell Theo Walcott, while faces the prospect of losing Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil, meaning that the Gunners will almost certainly need reinforcements in wide areas. It isn’t hard to assume that Bailey would get far more first team opportunities at the Emirates than at Stamford Bridge, should he decide to move.
Bailey only moved to Leverkusen 12 months ago, making a £12m move from Belgian side, Genk.
