Arsenal star Mesut Özil wants to move to Manchester United according to reports in Germany.
After a summer where everyone has been talking about Alexis Sanchez’s proposed move to Manchester City, with the Chilean entering the final year of his contract, talk about Ozil’s future was relatively quiet.
However, similarly to Sanchez, the German also has less than 10 months remaining on his current deal and is free to discuss his future with other clubs from January onwards, with contract talks having stalled between the player and the club. It is believed that Özil has rejected a new deal worth £8m-a-year (£155,000-a-week) to remain at the Gunners.
German publication SportBild now claim that Özil wants to move to Manchester United next summer where he would be reunited with Jose Mourinho. Özil and Mourinho spent three years working together during their respective time at Real Madrid between 2010 and 2013.
Özil was one of Mourinho’s most trusted players, consistently playing in excess of 50 games in each of his three seasons in the Spanish capital, scoring 27 goals in the process. He is now thought to be keen on working under the Portuguese manager once again, and is being linked with a free transfer to Manchester United next summer.
The move from the Emirates to Old Trafford would likely cause as much controversy as when Robin van Persie made the same move back in 2012. Van Persie went on to fire United to the Premier League title in his debut season with the Red Devils and was widely abused by Arsenal fans following the move.
