Lucas Torreira has been described as the second strongest midfielder in Europe by his former coach Marcello Donatelli – behind only Barcelona’s Sergio Busquets.
The Uruguayan midfielder made the £26 million move to Arsenal this summer as Unai Emery looks to revitalise the squad left to him by Arsene Wenger.
While Torreira will have been a relative unknown to many Gunners fans at the start of the summer, the 22-year-old put in a string of dynamic performances for Uruguay at this summer’s World Cup.
However, his displays will have come as no surprise to former Pescara assistant manager Marcello Donatelli, who thinks that the former Sampdoria midfielder is one of the best in European football:
“His technique, his determination and his tactical intelligence always impressed me,” Donatelli told Sky Sports.
“He has always been strong in understanding those defensive tactical aspects and he is very mature tactically in terms of how he reads the game.
“He can cope with the gaps that emerge in midfield with great intelligence and he covers very well. He is the one who corrects the spaces and cuts out the passes between the lines in the defensive phase.
“After Sergio Busquets, he is tactically the strongest midfielder in Europe.”
