Arsenal midfielder opens up on demand to leave club

Fabio Vieira has revealed that he pushed for an exit from Arsenal this summer after returning to former club FC Porto on loan.

Vieira has signed a season-long loan deal with the Portuguese side after a difficult time in North London, with the midfielder having started just five Premier League games since his £34m move to Arsenal in 2022.

The 24-year-old requested to leave Arsenal in the summer in search of minutes and returns to Porto on loan, though the deal has no option to make the move permanent.

Vieira emerged as one of the Primeira Liga’s leading midfielders during his first spell at the Estádio do Dragão and has confirmed the ‘idea of returning’ came from him.

Vieira delighted to seal Porto loan move

He said he can’t wait to ‘give everything on the pitch’ and believes Porto is the perfect place to continue ‘growing and developing’.

“The idea of returning came from me. I love this club and I’m going to give everything on the pitch,” Vieira told O Jogo.

“I’m happy, obviously, it’s my home. I’m looking forward to being at the stadium, playing in front of these fans and doing the best I can for this club this season.

“It was a chance that, above all, came to me because it was something I already wanted: to play. I had a difficult time in England, an operation, and at this moment I felt that FC Porto was a good opportunity to continue growing and developing.

“I felt that this was the right place to do it this season.”
