Premier League rivals Manchester City and Arsenal will battle it out for West Brom centre-back Jonny Evans in January, according to reports in The Mirror.

Both clubs have been monitoring the player for some time, and are eager to reinforce their backlines going into the second half of the season.

Manchester City almost signed the player this summer, with the club making several bids for the 29-year-old in the final days of the transfer window, but West Brom were unwilling to sell at the time.

Evans, began his career at Manchester United and won three Premier League titles during his time at Old Trafford. In fact, Sir Alex Ferguson rated him so highly, that he sold Gerard Pique to Barcelona in order to make room in his squad for the Northern Irishman.

New Baggies boss Alan Pardew, has admitted he is aware of the interest surrounding the player and will hold talks with him soon.

Evans is said to be keen on a transfer, and was disappointed that a move did not materialise during the summer.
