Arsenal are being linked with a move for RB Leipzig defender Dayot Upamecano.
Unai Emery is desperate to add to his centre-back options this summer after Arsenal finished the season with only the ninth-best defensive record in the Premier League, and is eyeing a move for Leipzig’s French U21 international.
The highly-rated 20-year-old was part of the Bundesliga’s best defence under Ralph Rangnick, as Leipzig finished third in Germany’s top flight and secured qualification for next season’s Champions League.
According to ESPN, Arsenal’s own failure to qualify for Europe’s premier competition could however hinder their chances of securing a deal.
Wednesday night’s 4-1 Europa League final defeat to Chelsea means Arsenal will be absent from the Champions League for the third consecutive season, with reports suggesting Emery’s transfer budget is likely to be around £40m, although it could be bolstered by funds raised from player sales.
That budget is likely to make a move for Upamecano difficult, whilst the defender could opt to stay with Leipzig next season to play amongst Europe’s elite.
The Gunners have also been linked with St. Etienne’s 18-year-old defender, William Saliba.
